Education Seminars This Sunday:

Guiding children’s interaction with computers from 10:00am to 11:00am in Cafeteria
Vivian Tai from Computer Adventures – Bits, Bytes & Bots will share some guidelines for parents to manage their children’s interaction with computers.  The main topics of discussion will be :

-What children do on computers

-How much limitation and control is appropriate

-What are some productive activities on the computers

She will recommend some activities/tool for parents to manage their children’s computer interactions and much more.

Brain Balance from 11:15am to 12:30pm in Cafeteria

Dr. Mark Goldenberg from the Brain Balance Achievement Center will give us a talk about the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and the function of the left and right hemispheres. He will further explain how to improve brain function by improving communication between the left and right brain. This leads to improved attention, academic performance, behavior and social interaction.

华夏大纽约春节联欢会 (HXGNY Spring Festival) 2/17/2013:

辞 别龙年,喜迎蛇年,二月十七日,我们将在White Plains High School 举办华夏大纽约蛇年新春联欢会。 12:30PM-1:30PM为聚餐时间, 1:15PM至2:00PM为儿童游艺。 2:15PM至4:30PM我们将在学校礼堂进行文艺演出。欢迎大家积极参与这一年一度最大盛会. 请大家这个星期天在餐厅入口买票 ($8 一人)。

The Spring Festival party will be held at White Plains High School on February  17, 2013 from 12:30PM to 4:30PM. Lunch will be served (12:30PM-1:30PM), followed by games (1:15PM to 2:00PM) and performances (2:00PM-4:30PM). Tickets ($8 per person) will be sold at the Cafeteria Entrance starting this Sunday.

Volunteer help from parents and students is always essential to assure success of the celebration. If you would like to help, either with lunch distribution, site decorations, stage assistance or cleaning up, please email your contact information to fengxsaavedra@gmail.com.

Dancing Classes for Spring Semester Open for Registration:

1. Dancing Club: (The Line Dance Class and Latin Class are merged and we named it Dancing Club)

New Technology Classes for the Spring Semester:

Our school is planning to open 12- session Technology Enrichment Classes in the Spring semester starting 2/17/2013 if there is enough enrollment. Please click here for detailed class information. If you want to register, please email registration@hxgny.org.

Computer Arcade Game Creation (Senior Technology Class) – 9:30am to 10:30am for students Ages 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8): 
Utilizing GameMaker software, our teachers will guide the student through every step of developing a customized functional game, including drag-and-drop programming, designing multiple levels and adding features of a real arcade-style video game.  Students will learn about creating sprites, objects events and actions, and design their own rooms/levels. This camp is perfect for beginners, as well as for returning students who want to add on to their previously created game or create a new one. *Students take home a CD with their games, the GameMaker software and our game-making resources files.

Stop-motion Animated Movie Making (Junior Technology Class) – 11:30am to 12:30am for students Ages 6 to 8 (Grade 1 to 3): 
Lights…Camera…Action!  Using stop-motion animation and digital post-production editing, students will produce LEGO® movies much like the “brickfilms” viewed on YouTube.  Students will learn about developing creative storytelling techniques, incorporating visual and audio special effects. No experience is necessary and you can take this class as many times as you like. *Students take home a CD with the stop-motion software and movies at the end of the class.

New Adult Art/Painting Class for the Spring Semester:

The Adult Art/Painting Class will start February 3, 2013 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. The instructor, Ms. Aihua Shea, has been teaching drawing and painting in Chinese school and local community for fourteen years.  She will teach brush painting (中国国画) in the adult art class.  Please bring a check ($131 payable to HXGNY) to the first class on February 3rd.  Please email registration@hxgny.org to register.

Recap All-Parent Meeting Last Sunday:

上周日春季学期开学第一天,大纽约华夏召开了全体家长会议。会上,校长林骏、家长会长姚大纯及学校领导团队成员给大家汇报了学校的运作状况,展望了春季学期的工作重点及下一学年的前景。去半年里,我们新的学校从初创逐步走上正轨,发展成为一个优质的中文学校及一个和谐的社区。现有三百四十多名少儿学生在册上学。学校设有从启蒙班到九年级中文、AP 中文完整的语言课体系以及 CSL(第二外语中文),开设了四十多门文化课和成人课,并将在新学期开设一系列广受欢迎的新课程。董事会主席胡大鹏代表董事会向家长们、老师们、校委会、家长会及所有的志愿者表示衷心感谢,并向大家介绍了董事会的工作及构想,号召大家有钱出钱、有力出力,齐心协力把我们的学校办得更好,继续打响华夏大纽约的品牌。

Last Sunday was the first day of the 2013 Spring semester. Principal Jun Lin and PC Chair DaChun Yao hosted the All-parent meeting. The school leadership teams updated parents on the status of our school operations and plans for the Spring semester and the next school year.

In the last half year, HXGNY has grown into an excellent Chinese school and a harmonious, vibrant and ever expanding community. HXGNY currently has more than 340 Chinese language students enrolled in pre-K to 9th grade, AP Chinese and CSL classes. The school also offers about 40 cultural classes and adult classes. We are also offering interesting new classes in the Spring semester. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Board Chairman Dapeng Hu gave his sincere thanks to parents, dedicated teachers, administration team, PTA team and selfless volunteers. The school leadership teams hope more parents will volunteer their time and effort to contribute to the HXGNY community.

RECAP: 上周日2013冬季围棋竞赛 (2013 Winter Go Tournament last Sunday)

华夏大纽约冬季围棋竞赛于2013年1月27日圆满结束,总共有28名选手参赛,其中包括80多岁高龄的日本棋手 Mozart Ishizuka 五段(纽约日本围棋俱乐部主席)以及年仅11岁,去年的全胜选手 Yingshyan Ku。经过3轮初赛,2轮复赛的角逐,获奖名单如下:
初学组:Andrew Pang 第一;  初级组:Serina Wang 第一,Jessica Wang 第二;中级组:   Bethany Tallan第一,Brian Zhou 第二;高级组:Leo Lei 第一, Jeffrey Tallan第二。

本次活动由美国应昌期围棋教育中心资助,感谢该中心的代表人员Amy Liu以及Shaoyong Li 亲自从波士顿赶来助威。本次比赛由围棋老师唐洁六段主持评判,我们在此对她的敬业精神以及艰辛付出表达由衷的敬意, 另外感谢Frank Zhu, Vicky Lee以及众多学校志愿者的支持和帮助。详情请点击这里照片请点击这里(照片组一照片组二)。

2013 winter GO tournament concluded with great success on 01/27/13.  28 players participated in this event, including senior Japanese player Mr Mozart Ishizuka (age 80+, 5 duan) who is the President of the Japanese Go Club in New York and the advanced youth player Mr. Yingshyan Ku (age 11) who was the all-game winner last year. After 3 preliminary round matches and two games in the final round,  we congratulate the following winners:

Beginner group:   Andrew Pang (1st place); Junior group:  Serina Wang (1st place) and Jessica Wang (2nd place);  Intermediate group:  Bethany Tallan (1st place) and Brian Zhou (2nd place); Senior group :  Leo Lei (1st Place) and  Jeffrey Tallan (2nd Place).

Safety Reminder:

Please don’t drop off/pick up between the North Street entrance and parking lot entrance.  You can drive further ahead for drop off/pick up. Otherwise you will block the traffic.

Gyms News:

We will have only one gym (South Gym)  available till the end of March. The other gym will be used by WPHS. Please plan accordingly.

Per WPHS request, please do not keep any gym exit doors open throughout school sessions. Use only the door designated for HXGNY for entrance.

WACA’s 2013 Chinese New Year Celebration This Saturday! 

Date: Saturday, February 2, 2013; Time: 2:00 pm to 9:30 pm;
Place: New Rochelle High School (265 Clove Road, New Rochelle, NY 10801)

WACA (Westchester Association of Chinese Americans) has been holding its gala event for more than 20 years, with enthusiastic participation from local organizations, Chinese schools and businesses. This year, we will feature such fun activities as Face-painting, Chinese Custom Photo Station, Wii Games Station, Children Magicians Workshop, Math Brain-teasers, Dumpling-making, and Chinese Teahouse. The evening program will have such highlights as the Magic Show by master magicians Mrs. Xinying Liu and her son, Mr. Peng Li; Erhu solo performance of The New Year Eve’s Song by renowned concertmaster from Macao, Mrs. Xuefei Jia; WACA Style Dance; and lots of heart-warming singing and eye-popping dances from Chinese schools and community groups.
Tickets will be sold on-site in the school.  Please look for the table flagged with WACA promotion flyer.
Early bird prices if purchased by Jan. 29, 2013: $25/adult, $15/senior (65 years & up) or $15/child (3-12 years);
After Jan. 29, 2013: $30/adult, $20/senior or $20/child after January 29th.

OCA-WHV: The 6th Rising Stars Concerts

Music: classical and contemporary works from the West and East.
