During the middle school years, students will begin to ask more questions and think critically about the information they are learning. This is the perfect time to introduce them to classic literature and a variety of literary genres. It is also a great time to encourage them to have conversations about the books and stories they are reading.
This class welcomes current 6th and 7th grade students and introduce them to a variety of literatures. The classes will be discussion based exploring key literary elements: character development, theme, symbol, motif, conflict, setting and foreshadowing. Children are encouraged to research about authors and historical background. We hope to develop skills: close reading, building from evidence to argument, comparative analysis and independent critical thinking.
The books are selected from the award winners and classic literature. The sample choices are:
Historical fiction: Number the Stars, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, The Book Thief
Allegory: The Little Prince, Animal Farm.
Children’s Literature: Holes, Secret Garden
Classics: Robinson Crusoe; Gulliver’s Travels
