Happy new year to everyone! HXGNY is getting ready for our biggest celebration to welcome the Year of the Horse! With multiple sponsors’ support, we are now equipped with brand new audio-visual equipment. Including the professionals, we now have over 30 performances including singing, dancing, magic, cross-talk, short play, and many others. After the performance, each kid will receive a goody bag.Event Ticket:
All tickets (kids and adults) will be $10 per ticket. Each ticket will cover lunch and water. Lunch includes boxed Chinese lunch or pizza and one bottle of water.Please click here to purchase online ahead of time. After you purchase online, you will need to bring the receipt to school and exchange for actual paper tickets in H room on 2/9.

1. Classroom rules 
HXGNY Admin team would like to remind all parents, students and teachers to follow White Plains High School classroom rules. It’s imperative to leave the classroom the way it was.  Parents please inform your child/children:
  • Placing stickers on Smartboards, monitors, or any other place in a classroom is NOT permitted.
  • No writing on Smartboards at all!
  • No one is allowed to be in a teacher’s desk area or filing cabinet..
Teachers, please pay special attention to teachers’ corner to be sure you left everything the way they were.
2. HXGNY School Yearbook – Class Photo Taking Sunday 02/09
To prepare for HXGNY’s first edition of yearbook, we will take class pictures on Feb 09, 2014.  Please dress your child appropriately. If you don’t want your child to be in the class pictures, please send an email to hxgnyadmin@googlegroups.com and provide your child’s name and class/grade (such as MLP G3 C2).

The proximate time of photo-taking:
Pre-K, K, G1, G2, G3: 9:30-10:30 AM
G4, G5, G6, G7, G8, G9, AP: 10:30-11:30 AM
Culture Classes:  during class time.
 
3. School Directory Pickup
Please come to information desk in H-Room this Sunday from 10:00 – 12:00 to pickup your 2013 – 2014 School Directory. Please be noted that each family is distributed with one copy only.
4. No Adult Class this Sunday
Adult class will be officially open on 02/16 for spring 2014 semester.   There will be no adult class this Sunday.  Please assist your kids and their classes to prepare for the Chinese New Year Celebration and class photo-taking.
 

穿唐装，提灯笼，游华夏闹元宵
华夏大纽约元宵游行（02/16）

二月十四日是农历正月十五，中国传统的元宵节，又称为“上元节”。这是春节之后的第一个重要节日。为庆祝中国的这一传统节日，华夏大纽约将在二月十六日举办唐装日/华灯游行。游行将于11：15am开始，起始于B楼的南侧门，绕行C楼回廊。学前班至三年级学生将以班为单位参加。希望小朋友们穿上中国传统服装参加游行。其他年级的学生可自愿、自由加入游行。在游行终点，每一个参加游行的同学都会得到一个礼品红包。希望家长能够为孩子准备游行用灯笼，购买、学生自制皆可。当日学校也备有灯笼，以便大家购买。

HXGNY Lantern Parade (02/16)

February 14, the fifteenth day after Chinese New Year, is the first major Chinese festival of the year, the Lantern Festival. To celebrate this traditional holiday, HXGNY will host a Chinese costume day/lantern parade on 02/16. Students are encouraged to dress in traditional Chinese costumes. The parade will start at 11:15 am from the south gate of B building and go along the C building hallway. Pre-K to 3rd grade students will parade in groups of their classes. Other grades students, on voluntary basis, are also welcome to join as individuals or groups. Chinese goodie bags will be given out at the end of the parade. All participants should parade with a lantern, either purchased or homemade. Please see below for the Lantern Festival History and tips on how to make lanterns. You can also purchase lantern from the organizers on the day of the parade.

 中國經典民俗風情舞劇《十裏紅妝》購票信息

2013-2014华夏大纽约围棋赛圆满结束

在所有选手的热情参与和大家的协助下，2013-2014华夏大纽约围棋赛于一月二十六日下午圆满结束。比赛吸引了众多不同背景的选手，除我校学生外，还有选手来自于外校，曼哈顿和多伦多。大多数选手介于五和八岁之间，去年九月才开始在我校学棋，也有专程赶来支持比赛的五段棋手钱盈芝。所有少儿选手按围棋水平和年龄均匀分成四组，每组四名，所有选手都表现出良好的比赛态度。经过三轮比赛，顾应贤、王思韵、王暖洋和王安舟赢得一等奖，史婕如、邓宇飞、庞袭明和王意轩赢得二等奖，其余选手获得优胜奖。在此我们对全体参赛选手的体育精神和体育风貌表示嘉许，感谢美国围棋协会对我们围棋教学和比赛的支持，众多家长的现场帮助，以及 Frank Zhu 和 Leo Lei 给予我们围棋老师的长期帮助。我们在此特别感谢围棋老师唐洁女士对围棋的专注和推广使我们华夏大纽约有如此精彩的围棋课和比赛。本次比赛的照片请看这里。

2013-2014 HXGNY Go Tournament Finished Successfully

With the warm participation of all the players and help of many people, HXGNY 2013-2014 Go Tournament finished successfully Jan 26 afternoon. The players came from a very wide range of background. Besides many students of our school, we also had players from other Chinese schools, Manhattan and Toronto. While the majority of the players are ages 5 to 8 and have only been playing Go since September 2013, we also saw very experienced adult player Yingzhi Qian of 5 Dan coming to support our Tournament. The junior players were assigned to four different groups according to their playing levels and ages with four in each group. All players showed good attitude. After three rounds of matches, Yingshyan Ku, Serina Wang, Nuanyang Nova Wang and Andrew Wang won the First Prize. Emily Shi, Kilin Tang, Andrew Pang and Andrian Wang won the Second Prize. The rest of players won the Achievement Prize. We would like to congratulate all players for their full brain exercise and good sportsmanship. We appreciate American Go Association’s support to our Go teaching and events, the parents’ help on-site and the long standing assistance of Frank Zhu and Leo Lei to our Go Teacher. Our special thank goes to our Go Teacher Mrs. Jie Tang for her dedication and promotion for HXGNY to have such wonderful Go classes and tournaments. Please see the tournament photos here.

Recap: Education Seminar – America’s Public and Private School System

Last Sunday Dr. Bonnie Liao gave a talk about American’s public and private school. A lot of parents attended the seminar and discussion later. She shared her experience on both school systems:
1) Public school focus on standardized measurement, like standardized test, AP courses, etc. It uses those test to measure academic achievement.
2) Private school focus more on character development and how students learn.

New Adult Culture class – Bagua Walking Meditation

Bagua walking meditation – walking in a circle while holding fixed postures. It will energize and strengthen the body while calming the mind, and refining and purifying the spirit. The exercise will open and harmonize the meridians of the body and promote overall fitness.
Proven effects of practicing Bagua: Bagua calls for practitioners to assume twisted spine positions which not only help stretch the spine, but also enhance blood circulation to all organs. As a result, practicing Bagua can help prevent cardiovascular diseases, cerebral vascular diseases, osteoporosis, and among others. Furthermore, a person can become more flexible and agile as a result of constantly changing direction during practice.

八卦内功，是一种以掌法变换和行步走转为主的内家武功，柔中有刚。走八卦可以在强身健体的同时，平静净化你的头脑和心灵。坚持走八卦还可以帮助你打通经脉，以促进身体的整体健康。
经实践证明的走八卦的功效：走八卦要求练习者的脊柱处于扭转的姿势。这种姿势不仅可以拉伸脊柱，也同时促进血液在各个器官间的循环。所以走八卦可以帮助预防心脑血管疾病，骨质疏松症，等其他多种疾病。同时，因为行走过程中需要定时转换方向，走八卦还可以增强一个人的灵敏度。

Fee: $140(around 95*1.5) + $40 registration fee
Location: Near Tai-ji class

Teacher Bio:
Mr. Chan had taught Taiji in Scarsdale for more than 10 years. He has studied martial arts since he was 5 yeas old. In 1972 he met a Tai Chi master (Pang-Na Chang), who studied with a third generation Yang style master. Since then Yao has been training and teaching various techniques on different levels: Sword, Shaolin staff, herbal medicine, accupressure, accupuncture, nutrition, I Ching, Tao Te Ching, Taoist Qi Gong.

Diversity Committee Community Outreach Event

The Diversity Committee under HXGNY Board has planned a community outreach event “Lunar New Year @ Your Library” in various libraries on Feb. 1st. The event will be one hour long including story telling, paper folding, face painting, etc. Please contact Yawen Liu at yawen66@gmail.com if your child would like to help. This is a meaningful event to the volunteers who represent our school in our local community.

2014 Chinese New Year Festival at Westchester County Center

The Westchester Association of Chinese Americans (WACA) welcomes you to join the 2014 Chinese New Year Festival to be held at the Westchester County Center on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 2pm to 6pm.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Culture and Traditions of the Chinese New Year Festival”. It features many fun activities, like art gallery, traditional hand-craft, health exercise demonstrations, Chinese musical instrument performances, and delicious food sampling, etc. There will also be a formal program of artistic performances by a Chinese professional acrobat team and the local art groups. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of this annual Chinese New Year celebration event organized by WACA.

2013-14学年华夏大纽约围棋竞赛将于一月二十六日下午举行，社区全体成员（包括校内外的少儿和成人）均可参与。少儿组获胜者将获得奖品，成人将有非常好的机会与其他有共同兴趣者交流。预祝参赛选手赛出风格，赛出水平。欢迎各位家长和学生到场观摩。

HXGNY 2013-14 School Year Go Tournament will be held in the afternoon of Jan 26. Everybody in our community is welcome to participate, including both children and adults and those outside of our Chinese school. Awards will be presented to the winners of the children’s group while adults will have the great opportunity to play for leisure with other people with the same interest. 片片飞雪中，蛇年已缓缓逶迤而去，声声的马蹄则越来越近。再过几个星期，就又到了一年一度的华夏全校大聚会的时节了。今年的春节联欢会，无论规模、内容、设备都更胜往昔。经过志愿者们一个多月的努力，我们已成功获得多个商家的赞助，筹资添置了全新的会场音响设备。各个文化语言班级踊跃报名参加演出，登记的节目已达三十多个，涵盖歌舞、小品、诗歌、相声、武术、魔术等多个种类，我们还聘请了专业演员为大家表演助兴。午餐、游艺、布展的安排工作也正在有序进行，届时将有近二十个游艺活动、文化展位。所有小朋友们请注意，每位小朋友在联欢会后都可以领取一份新年礼物，请小朋友们一定不要错过。联欢会时间安排为：

Chinese New Year is coming!  HXGNY school is getting ready for our biggest celebration to welcome the Year of the Horse!  With multiple sponsors’ support, we are now equipped with brand new audio-visual equipment for the event.  Most of the language and cultural classes have submitted programs, and we have also invited professional singers and magicians to perform. We now have over 30 performances including singing, dancing, magic, cross-talk, short play and many others. After the performance, each kid will receive a goody bag.Agenda:
Lunch:  12:30- 1:30 PM, either Chinese boxed lunch or pizza, in the cafeteria
Kids Activities: 12:30-1:30 PM, in the hallway outside of Auditorium
Performances: 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Auditorium
Giving out goodie bags: 4:00 PM after the performanceEvent Ticket:
All tickets (kids and adults) will be $8 per ticket when purchased on or before 1/26.
Any tickets purchased after 1/26, will be at a price of $10. So please purchase on or before 1/26 for the discount.

Education Seminar – America’s Public and Private School System

Time: Sunday 01/26 9:45AM – 11:45AM

Do you know all the programs that are available to your children at school?  What is the right channel to get your needs and wants heard in the US school system?  Have you explored private school options but don’t know what questions to ask?  How can public and private school programs help you if your child has special talents or needs? Have you ever encountered a situation that you and school take different stands on issues?
PCE club has invited the experts and parents in both public and private school systems to host our 122th event – a panel discussion on the US school system.
The goals of this event are to:
1) Help parents to learn the major differences between public and private schools, advantages and disadvantages of both school systems;
2) Share knowledge/information and experience of attending public vs private schools;
3)  Discuss how to best leverage the public and private education resources;
4) Share best practices how to choose the right school for your children;
5) Exchange ideas on how to deal with schools when things go wrong.

New Adult Culture class – Bagua Walking Meditation

Bagua walking meditation – walking in a circle while holding fixed postures. It will energize and strengthen the body while calming the mind, and refining and purifying the spirit. The exercise will open and harmonize the meridians of the body and promote overall fitness.
Proven effects of practicing Bagua: Bagua calls for practitioners to assume twisted spine positions which not only help stretch the spine, but also enhance blood circulation to all organs. As a result, practicing Bagua can help prevent cardiovascular diseases, cerebral vascular diseases, osteoporosis, and among others. Furthermore, a person can become more flexible and agile as a result of constantly changing direction during practice.

八卦内功，是一种以掌法变换和行步走转为主的内家武功，柔中有刚。走八卦可以在强身健体的同时，平静净化你的头脑和心灵。坚持走八卦还可以帮助你打通经脉，以促进身体的整体健康。

Teacher Bio:
Mr. Chan had taught Taiji in Scarsdale for more than 10 years. He has studied martial arts since he was 5 yeas old. In 1972 he met a Tai Chi master (Pang-Na Chang), who studied with a third generation Yang style master. Since then Yao has been training and teaching various techniques on different levels: Sword, Shaolin staff, herbal medicine, accupressure, accupuncture, nutrition, I Ching, Tao Te Ching, Taoist Qi Gong.

Diversity Committee Community Outreach Event

The Diversity Committee under HXGNY Board has planned a community outreach event “Lunar New Year @ Your Library” in various libraries on Feb. 1st. The event will be one hour long including story telling, paper folding, face painting, etc. Please contact Yawen Liu at yawen66@gmail.com if your child would like to help. This is a meaningful event to the volunteers who represent our school in our local community.

2014 Chinese New Year Festival at Westchester County Center

The Westchester Association of Chinese Americans (WACA) welcomes you to join the 2014 Chinese New Year Festival to be held at the Westchester County Center on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 2pm to 6pm.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Culture and Traditions of the Chinese New Year Festival”. It features many fun activities, like art gallery, traditional hand-craft, health exercise demonstrations, Chinese musical instrument performances, and delicious food sampling, etc. There will also be a formal program of artistic performances by a Chinese professional acrobat team and the local art groups. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of this annual Chinese New Year celebration event organized by WACA.

 Chinese Teacher Training Workshop

Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York and New York University Center for Developing Chinese Language Teachers host a Chinese Teacher Training Workshop on January 25, 2014.
Topic: Lesson Plan Designing and Instructional Material Editing
This workshop demonstrates the necessity of designing cohesive interactions between instructional procedures and sequencing of text information, for achieving effective teaching of Chinese as a second language. The workshop includes hands-on experiences of text information sequencing in reciprocity with lesson plan designing, which will be discussed, analyzed and evaluated from theoretical and pedagogical perspectives. Attendees are expected to complete the workshop experience with a more productive capacity for lesson preparation and pedagogical operations.
