Our school triumphed at the Regional Speech Contest Final last Sunday. Out of 6 first prize winners, our school collected 4.
5 schools participated in the final contest, with 15 kids in each of Grades 1, 2, and 3. Our school sent in 9 kids in total. After close and heated competition, each grade has awarded 2 first, 4 second and 9 third prizes. The break down of our school’s result can be viewed above.
Congratulations to all our participants! While celebrating, we would like to show our gratitude to those who have assisted us along the way:
– Team Leader Jennifer Liu, Teacher Mei Dong Hua, Wendy Cheng and her daughter Natalia, Carol Zhou, and Sarah Zhang;
– the devoted parents;
– the supportive Admin team.
– the hosting branch HXNYC for all the efforts to make it a successful event.
Last but not least, all the glory goes to our talented kids: Each of them thrived under the pressure, and all delivered their best of the best. In addition, we would like to recognize Jeelin Liu, who sacrificed his opportunity when we had a tie at the school level contest. All first prize winners and Jeelin Liu will be little MCs in the upcoming Chinese New Year party.

New Adult Culture class – Bagua Walking Meditation
Bagua walking meditation – walking in a circle while holding fixed postures. It will energize and strengthen the body while calming the mind, and refining and purifying the spirit. The exercise will open and harmonize the meridians of the body and promote overall fitness.
Proven effects of practicing Bagua: Bagua calls for practitioners to assume twisted spine positions which not only help stretch the spine, but also enhance blood circulation to all organs. As a result, practicing Bagua can help prevent cardiovascular diseases, cerebral vascular diseases, osteoporosis, and among others. Furthermore, a person can become more flexible and agile as a result of constantly changing direction during practice.

Teacher Bio:
Mr. Chan had taught Taiji in Scarsdale for more than 10 years. He has studied martial arts since he was 5 yeas old. In 1972 he met a Tai Chi master (Pang-Na Chang), who studied with a third generation Yang style master. Since then Yao has been training and teaching various techniques on different levels: Sword, Shaolin staff, herbal medicine, accupressure, accupuncture, nutrition, I Ching, Tao Te Ching, Taoist Qi Gong.

1/26 Mathcounts Mock Exam Announcement
我校Mathcounts俱乐部的五位同学（Benjamin Hu, Max Li, Eric Wei, Brian Wu, and Vincent Xu）
5 students from HXGNY Mathcounts Club (Benjamin Hu, Max Li, Eric Wei, Brian Wu, and Vincent Xu) attended the mock mathcounts competition hosted by Brunswick School this week on 1/14/2014. There are also other HXGNY students participated through their own schools. A total of 8 local schools and 60+ students participated in the competition. Our kids did very well with Eric Wei winning the 1st place, Max Li winning the 3rd place, and Benjamin in the top-8 count-down round. Congratulation to their achievements and we wish all the students good luck in Feb 2nd Mathcounts chapter competition. We will hold a mock spring round test on 1/26. The test will be 30 problems in 60 minutes starting from 12:45pm. Non club members are welcome to emailmr.min.xu@gmail.com to register.
HXGNY 2013-14 School Year Go Tournament
To Accommodate some families’ year end holiday schedule, HXGNY 2013-14 School Year Go Tournament will be held in the afternoon of Jan 26. Everybody in our community is welcome to participate, including both children and adults and those outside of our Chinese school. Awards will be presented to the winners of the children’s group while adults will have the great opportunity to play for leisure with other people with the same interest. The registration is open now till Jan 21. Please register early since the cutoff will be strictly by enrollment time if players exceed our capacity. To register please fill the attached form and email tohxgny.go@gmail.com. Please use the Paypal link to pay the $15 per player registration fee.

2014 Chinese New Year Festival at Westchester County Center
The Westchester Association of Chinese Americans (WACA) welcomes you to join the 2014 Chinese New Year Festival to be held at the Westchester County Center on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 2pm to 6pm.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Culture and Traditions of the Chinese New Year Festival”. It features many fun activities, like art gallery, traditional hand-craft, health exercise demonstrations, Chinese musical instrument performances, and delicious food sampling, etc. There will also be a formal program of artistic performances by a Chinese professional acrobat team and the local art groups. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of this annual Chinese New Year celebration event organized by WACA.

Community News: Chinese Teacher Training Workshop
Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York and New York University Center for Developing Chinese Language Teachers host a Chinese Teacher Training Workshop on January 25, 2014.
Topic: Lesson Plan Designing and Instructional Material Editing
This workshop demonstrates the necessity of designing cohesive interactions between instructional procedures and sequencing of text information, for achieving effective teaching of Chinese as a second language. The workshop includes hands-on experiences of text information sequencing in reciprocity with lesson plan designing, which will be discussed, analyzed and evaluated from theoretical and pedagogical perspectives. Attendees are expected to complete the workshop experience with a more productive capacity for lesson preparation and pedagogical operations.
