怎样在美国家庭里学好中文
Achieving Chinese fluency in an American family
时间：本周日12/21, 10-11：30 AM

Speaker:  Natalie Shell (郑芷兰), Doug Shell and Wendy Cheng-Shell (郑昀宁)
The Shell family will share their experience with how they guided their 11 year old daughter Natalie (郑芷兰) to learn Chinese in an English speaking environment. At Huaxia, she is in MPL7 th grade class (马力平七年级) and has been awarded the Excellent Student Certificate 优秀学生 every year. She’s also the winner of the Chinese hosting contest last week 小主持人比赛六年级以上的冠军, 2nd place winner at the singing contest last year 唱歌比赛二等奖, and a member of the Huaxia debate team 华夏辩论队. At her English elementary school, Natalie was admitted to all the gifted classes including English, Science and Math. She was also a math champion at her school as well as a recipient of High Honors from John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY).  She currently attends middle school at Greenwich Academy.
Natalie’s mother Wendy Cheng-Shell 郑昀宁 graduated from University of Cambridge 剑桥大学, and was a management consultant 管理顾问 for many years. She also represented Natalie’s elementary school for their gifted program 优质教育学校代表. Natalie’s father Doug Shell is American and speaks basic mandarin. He graduated from Brown University 布朗大学 and is currently a hedge fund manager 对冲基金经理 .
In this very informal workshop the shell family will discuss the obstacles of learning Chinese in America, and how to overcome them. They will also share some hints and tips on how to improve every aspect of learning Chinese, including listening, speaking, reading and writing skills 怎样把中文的听说读写都学好.
The seminar will be bi-lingual, with Natalie being a major part of the presentation (upon her request!).  We hope you can join us this Sunday.back to top

演讲比赛 SpeechContest

Dear parents,


What a successful event Sunday!  Our children have put forth such an incredibly captivating performance, some show astonishing maturity that brought tears to parents’ eyes.
A big shout out goes to our judges who have consciously avoided bias of any kind in scoring each contestant.  Sores were close but the finalists were all convincing wins.  The judges areHelena Chen, Lu Mario, Michelle Song, Liye Zhang, Rachl Wang, Yingjin Gan; Fang He, Carol Zhou, Gao Guanghua, Huawei Song, Mandy Sun; Linda Wu, Lian Wang, Linyan Li, Joy Ying, Bo Liu.  To ensure maximum fairness and participation, each judge panel consisted of parent judges plus impartial  pure volunteers who had no kids in the contest.Many volunteers (Yanyun Liu, Zeqiang Guan, Sheng Yang, Gao Guanghua) have contributed tremendous amount of time and energy, can’t say enough thank you to all of you, especially the score keepers/assistants ( Kunshan Sun, Charlie Xu, Wendy Cheng, Weiqun Wang, Hongwei Zhou, Jun Cao, Laura Liu, Silvia Ren, Qihong Huang ), their meticulousness and integrity is the keystone to this event’s success.

Special thanks also goes to our 3 moderators Jeff Wang, Zuojun Cao, and Claire He.  Their perfect pacing, quick wit and funny quips have crafted glistening examples for the young aspiring anchormen/women in the audience.
Top 3 winners from grade 1 to 3 will proceed to the 6-school Regional Final on 01/11/2015 morning, at our sister school HXNYC.  Their campus is the beautiful WCC in Valhalla.

2nd grade:  刘珂, 宋佳胜, 尹真
3rd grade:  冯一苇, 梁娃娃, 黄浩林
4&5 grades: 吴杰铭, 刘思源, 黄若涵

​These winners plus the 4th place runner ups will participate in a training session on 01/04/2015.  Details to follow.

演讲比赛 Speech Contest

61 students will participate this Sunday’s Speech/MC Contest.   We will kick off with exciting maybe a bit mundane pizza/hotdog lunch outside the auditorium at 12:40pm.  – Not the time to roll out the celebration banquet yet.  – $2 per slice of pizza/hotdog and $1 for bottled water, free for all contestants.

Afterwards please convene to the designated rooms for raffle drawing.  Once performance order is determined, the contest will commence in earnest.
Regional Final Speech Contest will be held 01/11/2014 at WCC, hosted by our sister school Huaxia Central New York.  Stay tuned for the next episode of this saga.

Talk title: Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves with Joy and Gratitude

Speaker: Angela Chiu
Parenthood is a journey of maturation and growth if we dare to learn more and teach less. When we have the courage to stop defending the way we are, or the way our parents raised us, we can open up the possibility that we are much greater and more magnificent and capable than we thought we were.
A happy person needs to have autonomy and sense of value. An autonomous child, whose life flows in her direction, acts productively because she wants to. She acts out of joy and love, not out of fear or need to earn approval. As parents, we need to get our own emotional reactions and conditioning out of the way so our child can be who she is without being held back by our past, by our anxiety about the future, or by our concern about what others may say about us as parents. We can nurture without shaping, like a gardener who waters and flowers, but doesn’t help them open nor choose their shapes or colors.
In this talk, I will share with you my 12-year journey of motherhood, how I shifted from my fear and desire to be in control, to an open and tender heart filled with gratitude and burning desire to understand my children and better myself.
Speaker Bio:
Angela Lan Chiu immigrated to the U.S. with her family when she was eighteen. She received her Ph.D. degree in EECS from MIT. She is a principal inventive scientist at AT&T Labs and leads key architecture and designs. Dr. Chiu holds twenty-one U.S. patents. She has published papers extensively, and served as chairman for numerous conferences and programs. She and her husband together with their two daughters (10 and 12-year-olds) live in Holmdel, New Jersey. Angela balances her busy and rich life with a deep love for the arts, music, and volunteering work for local communities. She treasures motherhood as the most rewarding journey in life. Since 2006, she has served as a moderator for PCE (Parents and Children Education) club online forum with over 900 members.

“科学与技术”俱乐部 Science and Technology Club

华夏大纽约将组成一个学生发起的“科学与技术”俱乐部！这个俱乐部的目的是让学生了解当今的科学与技术，增强对科学与技术的兴趣，开发学生对这方面课题研究的潜能和创新精神。将来，俱乐部也可以组织成员参加各种科技竞赛。

该俱乐部将于2015年1月开始，每两周举办一次活动，时间 12:30 – 1:30pm. 。俱乐部还将用电子邮件和Facebook群等方式 ，以保持会员了解最新的关于当前科技新闻和俱乐部近况。
四年级或四年级以上的同学， 欢迎踊跃报名参加。

活动计划举例：
1） 第一个项目的主题可以是“冬天”。项目的一些例子可能包括研究冬季的天气模式，天气对学生活动的影响等，俱乐部成员也可以创建他们自己的个人项目并与其他成员探讨，共同研究。
2）鼓励分享科技项目和知识，促进俱乐部成员之间及与外校的交流，争取把我们的课题项目带回当地社区进行科学与技术交流，并可能参加科技展览会（例如， 2015年国际消费电子展） 。

Dear parents,
This Sunday, 12/7 ,  we will have a parent teacher conference (PTC). PTC is a very important meeting for parents to know the teachers and the curriculum. It is also an opportunity for you to voice your concerns or ask questions. Please make every effort to attend and be on time.
Pre-K, K and CLS will have PTC during class time. Your teacher will tell you specific time slot for you to go the classroom. Other classes will have PTC in either the B cafeteria (registration room) or H cafeteria (downstairs big room). More details below.Note: A few classes may not hold PTC this week due to absence of your regular teacher. Please follow your teacher’s instructions.

演讲大赛 Speech Contest – Date Change 12/14/2014

Dear parents,
​​

Speech/MC (master of ceremony) Contest Is 12/14/2014, not 12/07!!

Our fair-minded teachers plus enthusiastic participants sparked the 1st round of speech contest. Many kids got multiple performance opportunities in too-close-to-call situations. 61 students have been nominated to the 2nd round on 12/14.   61位小朋友入围第二轮比赛。 Their parents have received an email notification on 11/25, just before the turkeys were thawed.
Time:   12/14/2024, 12:40pm
Location:  G122 (above auditorium )  for G1
D108 ( next to the Auditorium)  for G2, G6, G7, G8, G9
Little Theater ( underneath D108)  for G3, G4, G5
Lunch:  outside auditorium,  $2 per pizza/hot dog, $1/bottled water.  Contestants also pay
We ask each participant to clear 12/14 afternoon schedule as the appearance order is determined by random draw within each grade.  We cannot accommodate any special requests.
After a brief self-introduction, the contestant will deliver a 2-3 minute talent show, such as poem reciting, story telling, comedy, tongue twister, or show & tell.   G4 and above will also have a 1-minute impromptu Q/A.  简短的自我介绍后是2-3分钟的才艺展现（朗诵、讲故事、笑话, 绕口令，或美国学校常用的Show & Tell).    四年级以上加一分钟即兴问答。

Contestants will be split into 5 groups, G1, G2, G3, G4-5, G6-9.  Each group will produce top 3 winners.  Grade1-3 winners will proceed to the Regional Final Speech Contest on 01/11/2015.  G4+ winners will be Student MCs in future school event.  比赛分成5组3个赛场。每组产生前三名。
We will be needing many volunteers, from room/equipment set up, food serving, to judges, timers, and final clean up.  Please help out as much as you can to make this event enjoyable and memorable.

2014-2015 School Directory Cover Design Contest – Deadline 12/14

We welcome all children to submit original artwork for the HXGNY Student directory.  The artwork theme should be about the school life at HXGNY.  Please submit all original artwork to the Information Desk on or before Dec 14th (please mark the children’s name, age and class) .  The art teachers will select the final winning pieces to be featured on the front, the back cover and the illustration( 插图）of the directory.
华夏教学研讨会暨教师年会
11月15、16日,一年一次的华夏教学研讨会暨教师年会在新泽西的Somerset 举行。我们大纽约分校有二十几位老师和学校管理人员参加了这次盛会。这次大会的主题是教育、培训、发展、创新。与往年相比,今年的会议流程更精炼务实,讲座的内容与华夏的实践情况更贴近。在教材、教法、语言学理论和学校管理上都有很好的交流,效果很好。我校的黄岳董事做了《美国孩子也能教成辩论冠军》的专题演讲,孙凌云老师做了马立平四年级《草船借箭》的示范教学。在晚会上,老师们还表演了小合唱《送别》,展示了我们大纽约华夏的风采。

演讲大赛 Speech Contest – Date Change 12/14/2014

Dear parents,

Important Date Change,  Speech/MC ( master of ceremony) Contest Is 12/14/2014, a week later from the original 12/07. Please mark your calendar!

We are wrapping up the 1st round of selection by this Sunday.   An email  will go out to all parents whose children will be in the 12/14 contest,  shortly after all the nominations are collected from our devoted teachers.
Place : Little Theater for G1,2,3.   D108 for G4+ ( next to the Auditorium) 
Time:  12/14/2024, 12:40pm
Lunch:  $2 per pizza/hot dog, $1/bottled water.  Contestants also pay
The speech/MC Contest will commence simultaneously at two venues,  lasting 3 hours.   We ask each participant to clear 12/14 afternoon schedule as the appearance order is determined by random draw within each grade.
We will be needing many volunteers, especially judges.   This year all parents can be judges even if your child is in the contest.  The highest and lowest marks will be taken out automatically when calculating the final score for each kid.

Contestants will be split into two groups: G1-3, G4 and up. After a brief self-introduction, the child will deliver a 2-3 minute talent show, sucn as poem reciting, story telling, comedy, tongue twister, or show & tell.   G4 and above will also have a 1-minute impromptu Q/A. 比赛分成两组: 低年级组(一至三年级); 高年级组(四年级以上)。 简短的自我介绍后是2-3分钟的才艺展现（朗诵、讲故事、说笑话, 绕口令，或美国学校常用的Show & Tell).   题材健康活泼.  四年级以上加一分钟即兴问答。

Top 3 winners from grade 1,2,3 will join Regional Final on 01/11/2015. G4+ will be Student MCs in future school events.

To celebrate Thanksgiving, the regional Chinese Community will host a children’s cultural show at the Darien Library. Performances will include:
      Musical solos
Choral songs
The Ugly Duckling
The Empty Flower Pot
The show is open to the public and  everyone is welcome!
Time: 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm,
