家长论坛：美国私立中学和公立中学之比较

为什么有些家庭即使住在好学区还是选择送孩子去私立中学？为什么有些家长为了上最好的公立学校宁愿住在拥挤的市区？公立学校和私立学校各有什么优势和劣势？寄宿学校与非寄宿学校又有哪些不同？本周我们请来三个代表家庭一起讨论分享。
嘉宾简历
姚大纯博士特别注重对孩子基本素质的教育和培养。他的女儿姚岚于今年夏天以优异的成绩被全美最著名的公立高中亨特中学录取. 教育理念：人生是一个漫长的旅程，一个孩子的成功主要决定于其基本素质，如果父母从小注重对孩子多方面基本素质的培养，即便有时输在起跑线上，但最终依然会脱颖而出，在竞争中取胜。
朱阳博士家中有两个孩子。女儿鲁文菲小学和初中上的是公立学校，高中毕业于纽约布朗克斯的私立学校 Horace Mann School。文菲现在斯坦福大学 上四年级。儿子鲁文雄小学上的是公立学校，初中改上Horace Mann School。文雄 现在Horace Mann School 上高四。教育理念： 人生是走平衡木。应该提醒孩子在为将来做准备时，不要忘了活在当下。
黄琦博士的女儿在Scarsdale学区学习至7年级之后，转学至北京的一所国际学校学习2年，于2013年加入波士顿地区的住宿高中Phillips Exeter Academy。 黄琦 很高兴和大家一起交流分享在陪伴孩子成长中的体会。

Why some families chose private schools even though they live in excellent school districts? Why some parents chose public schools even though they have to live in crowd cities or pay high property tax? What’s advantage and disadvantage for private and public middle/high schools? What’s difference between Boarding school and non-Boarding school? We invite three families to share with us why they chose private or public schools.
Panelist Bio
Dr. Dachun Yao: Dr Yao is interested in the children’s basic quality training and self-controlling education. In the last summer, his daughter Athena Yao was accepted by the Hunter College High School, the best public high school in USA. Education philosophy: Life is a long journey, a child’s success mainly depends on his basic quality, if the parents pay more attention to the training of basic quality of children, even sometimes we will lose some chances at the beginning, but eventually, we will win the competition in the end.
Dr. Yang Zhu has two children. Her daughter Megan Lu went to public elementary school and middle school before finishing high school education at a private day school (Horace Mann School, Bronx, NY). She is now a senior at Stanford University. Dr. Zhu’s son Jonathan Lu went to public elementary school before entering Horace Mann School. He is now in 12th grade at Horace Mann School. Educational Philosophy: Life is a balancing act. We should remind our children to enjoy the moment while preparing for future.
Dr. Joyce Huang ’s daughter studied up to 7th grade in the Scarsdale school district, then relocated to a top-ranked international school in Beijing for 2 years. After that, she joined boarding school Phillips Exeter Academy in Boston area for 10th grade in 2013.
演讲大赛 Speech Contest
Dear parents,
To add more fun and excitement to the holiday season, our school’s annual Speech/MC ( master of ceremony) Contest on will be held on 12/07. And on 01/11/2015 our school will host the 6-school Regional Final 华夏总校决赛 which limits to Grade 1,2,3 children only. Grade 4+ winners will be Student MCs in Chinese New Year Party and Talent Show.
This year, we are striving to reach a wider participant base by providing each kid a public speech opportunity in the classroom. 广泛参与，扩大触及面。 The Speech Contest will now have 3 rounds:
1) Every student grade 1 and above will participate in a preliminary round of classroom selection. The classroom teacher will have the discretion to decide on the unique format/process of how he/she conduct this round of selection. Parents will receive detailed emails from the teachers. 充分交给老师自主权，灵活掌握，搞班级为主，全面参与，与教学考试相辅相成的讲演比赛。
2) By 11/23, 2-3 candidates from each class will be nominated by the teacher to proceed to the 2nd round of school level contest on 12/07. Contestants will be split into two groups: G1-3, G4 and up. After a brief self-introduction, the child will deliver a 1-3 minute talent show, poem, story telling, comedy, tongue twister, or show & tell. G4 and above will also have a 1-minute impromptu Q/A. 比赛分成两组: 低年级组(一至三年级); 高年级组(四年级以上)。 简短的自我介绍后是1-3分钟的才艺展现（朗诵、讲故事、说笑话, 绕口令，或美国学校常用的Show & Tell). 题材健康活泼, 积极向上。 四年级以上加一分钟的现场问答。

3) Top 3 winners from grade 1,2,3 will join Regional Final on 01/11/2015. G4+ will be Student MCs in future school events.

我校胡舒菡同学获2014年WACA杰出学生领袖奖第一名
胡舒菡同学以学业第一名的成绩毕业于我校，毕业后留校担任助教，
曾任学校学生刊物《小语世界》主编，
在今年的威郡华裔协会WACA (Westchester Association of Chinese Americans )杰出学生领袖奖评审中，她以优异的学习成绩和杰出的社区工作，
被参与评审的社区华人组织、各中文学校评委推选为第一名。
学校向胡舒菡同学表示祝贺！
Hannah Hu from HXGNY won 1st place of 2014 WACA Outstanding Student Leadership and Community Service Award . Hannah Hu graduated from HXGNY as an honor student. After graduation, she served as a TA volunteer at school. She was also the chief editor of school journal “Student Corner”. With her outstanding academic records and community service, she was voted as the 1st place winner by judges from local Chinese organizations and schools. Congratulations Hannah.
