This Sunday February 24, the fifteenth day after Chinese New Year, is the first major Chinese festival of the year, the Lantern Festival. To celebrate this traditional holiday, the HXGNY PTA will organize a Chinese costume day/lantern parade on 02/24. Students are encouraged to dress in traditional Chinese costumes. The parade will start at the south gate of B building at 11:00am and go along the C building hallway. Pre-K to 3rd grade will walk with their classes. Other grades, on voluntary basis, are also welcome to join as individuals or groups. Chinese goodie bags will be given out at the exit point. All children are expected to come to the parade with a lantern, either purchased or made at home. We will have a few lanterns for purchase at the main office this Sunday for parents’ convenience. To promote children’s involvement, we encourage parents to make the lantern with your child. Please click here for Lantern Festival History and tips on how to make lanterns. For all homemade lanterns, please clearly write the student’s name and class name. At the end of the parade, PTA will collect the homemade lanterns, which will be exhibited in the 03/03 HXGNY Lantern Competition. The winners of each age group will receive a special award. Lanterns will be returned after the exhibition. The lanterns will be scored on the following aspects: 1. Completeness and workmanship; 2. Novelty and liveliness of form; 3. Shape of lantern and environmental friendliness of material; 4. Theme.
