爬藤系列课程

  • SAT Verbal

Description: This course will build the skills and confidence you need to excel in SAT Verbal test. We combine SAT verbal practice strategies with carefully prepared course content and we give students the tools they need to succeed on this exam. We will build better test taking strategies and prepares students for critical reading, vocabulary, grammar and essay writing.

  • SAT Math

Description: This class is designed to prepare students for the math section of the SAT. In addition to reviewing topics from pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry, students will become familiar with the format of the test and learn strategies. This course will also include a discussion of the effective use of a graphing calculator. Much time will be devoted to practice problems similar to those on the SAT.

What to Bring:  A graphing calculator.

  • SAT Math/Physics Subject and PSAT

Description: This course is designed for an introduction to the basic strategies for SAT Math/Physics subject and PSAT. Students will feel that the reasoning test is fun for the preparations. The level of difficulty for the course will be adjusted based on the students’ levels. For younger age students, the course will cover PSAT introduction on structures and tackling strategies. For elder age students, the course will cover more subject Math/Physics concepts and strategies. Students with different levels will learn differently to meet their individual level of the challenge. The course is interesting driving. Some strategies and methodologies were introduced only in HXGNY and will be uniquely taught here, not in any other private and public schools. The students in class will feel the math fun even for the stressful college entrance exams.

  • AP Physics

Description: This course is designed to prepare student to pass colleague broad AP Physics test with satisfactory score within one school year. A higher goal is to prepare student to reach the same level of understanding of physics science and physics text material at normal ChineseHigh School student level.

Prerequisite:

High school student in their 10th, 11th or 12th grade, who have knowledge of high school physics, geometry and trigonometry, and with intention to take AP Physics test in May 2014 or May 2015.

Meeting time:

Sunday: 9:30 – 12:30 with 10 minutes break each hour

Course Organization:

This course will be focus on improving student test score in AP Physics test. As such, all course activity will be concentrated in review AP Physical materials, improving problem solving skills by doing practical question in class and review results in class. To stimulate student’s interest in physics course, we organize two to three physics lab visit around Great New York area or attending local seminars offered by local physics community. A typical course will be as follows

9:30 – 10:00

Review concepts and problem solving techniques learned in previous class,

10:00 – 10:30

In class review quiz, student rework previously solved problems in random orders. To make sure they remember what has been learned

Homework:

Homework will be assigned each week and is composed of two part:

1)    Review old material and prepare new material

2)    Homework problems

Students are expected to spend at least 3 hours per week at home for homework and review material. In class learning is mostly review and remind, so will be fast pacing, much in class hour will be on problem solving itself rather than teaching concepts. Parents is encouraged to offer extra help to student at home.

  • AP Calculus (AB and BC)

Description: This course is designed for AP calculus preparation. The differences (AB and BC) and structures of the tests will be introduced. Those four major parts that will be covered are graphical, numerical, algebraic, and verbal. The key concepts that you will learn are limits and continuity, derivatives and their applications, integration and its applications, differential equations and slope fields for AB; and convergence tests for series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, the use of parametric equations, polar functions, , L’Hôpital’s rule, integration by parts, improper integrals, rational functions integrals, Euler’s method, differential equations for BC. This course will benefit for students’ AP Calculus tests and their future calculus courses in colleges as well.

  • AP Chinese

Description: This AP Chinese course is a full-year course that covers the equivalent of a second-year (and /or the fourth semester) college Chinese course. It is an advanced Mandarin Chinese course aimed at equipping students both linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in Chinese within and beyond the school setting.  This course prepares students to demonstrate their level of Chinese proficiency across the three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) and the five goal areas (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities) as outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.

  • Olympic Math

Description: Olympic Math helps to foster a love for mathematics and problem solving.  In class, students are given problems from past competitions to solve and discuss. This prepares students for the many competitions through the year and teaches new problem solving techniques and helps students gain mathematical insight. Students will be guided to prepare for Nation Wide math competition.

  • English Writing class *

Description: This course focuses on developing essential writing skills at the sentence and paragraph levels and emphasizes fluency in the writing process through use of invention strategies, drafting, revising, and editing in order to produce organized and coherent writing. This course promotes clear, detailed writing that employs critical reading and thinking and basic research skills.

  • Chinese Culture and History 趣味中国文化课

招生对象:1、六年级以上准备以后参加AP中文课考试的学生

2、对中文感兴趣中外朋友。

学习内容及形式:

中国文化课将以生动形象的语言、图文并茂的音像视频及丰富生动的网络内容充分展现中国传统文化的博大精深、源远流长。课堂主要通过通过对话、游戏、音乐、视屏等不同的教学方式使学生在轻松、愉快的气氛下掌握中国文化的基础知识,丰富他们的文化素养。教学内容以传承中国文化为主:诸如习俗、艺术、历史、文学、音乐等。全面提高学生的听说读写能力,为学生参加 AP CHINESE 考试打下良好基础。  让中国文化的精髓发扬 光 大。

  • 交谊舞 Ballroom Dance

Description: Cha cha, waltz, rumba, swing. These words have a sense of intimacy when you usually hear them. These dances have become synonymous with class and grace during the decades. So if you are looking for an activity that you children can immerse themselves into then enrolling them into a ballroom dance classis a great choice. Ballroom dancing is both beneficial to a lot facets in life but is also quite fun and entertaining and is a handy skill to have when your kids become adults and start going to social events. This class is offer at Jr, Sr, and adult level.

  • 民族舞 Folk Dance

Description: Folk Dance Dance class develops students’ coordination, balance, strength, control, flexibility, and musicality. The class covers a variety of Chinese folk dances, including Miao zu, Xinjiang, Menggu, Zang zu, Dai zu, and Han zu. Students will perform in variety of occasions, such as Chinese New Year celebration and multicultural events. This class is offer at Jr, Sr, and adult level.

  • 拉丁舞 Latin Dance *

Description: Kids Salsa and Latin class starts with the teaching of basic body movements, muscle isolation and footwork associated with Latin dances such as Salsa, Cha-cha, Merengue and Bachata. As students gain proficiency, the lesson progresses into partner dance patterns incorporating inside and outside (spot) turn combinations, cross-body leads, side-breaks and more.

  • 少儿小提琴

Description: Suzuki Violinis an introductory music course that will prepare students for enrollment in 5th grade Suzuki Music.  This course will meet and exceed the state music standards.  The scope of the course will encompass basic violin technique and performance skills by utilizing the Suzuki method of instruction.  This includes the development of violin playing skills and aural music skills including fingerboard geography prior to the introduction of note reading.  Daily listening to the Suzuki Book 1 recording and memorization of Suzuki pieces will be the basis of instruction.  Introduction to basic note-reading skills will take place once correct playing position and correct tone production are established.  In addition, students will incorporate related subjects, such as geography, technology, and art to aid their understanding of music.
Prerequisite:
Experienced violin players are welcome. Audition might be required.

  • 戏剧和舞台

  • Magic   魔术 *

Description: In this class, students will learn some easy to do, and easy to carry, close-up magic tricks that they can use during walk-around gigs. There will also be some inexpensive magic tricks to purchase after the class.

  • Music appreciation class  音乐欣赏课

Description: A music appreciation class can be a window into a better understanding of music of all types. This music appreciation course will focus on both Western classical music and Chinese traditional music, in addition to material on music basics, periods, instruments and composers.

  • 机器人技术 Lego Robotics *

 Lego系统之所以成为一个带领年轻人入门机器人技术的伟大系统,主要原因就在于它不仅具备了软件功能,而且提供了您所需要的硬件基础。您能够将其他Lego系统中的木块、齿轮等材料拿过来建造您自己的机器人。这门课帮助学生学会如何开发一个简单的程序以及对其加以测试.并且学会如何建造一个遵守程序命令的最小的机器人.

  • 计算机绘画 ( 低年级 )

  • Web and computer animation design

Description:Basic experience using computer graphics programs used in photo editing and drawing such as Adobe’s Photoshop and/or Illustrator. An introduction to designing interactive media. Students will use Adobe Flash to produce animation and media rich interactive projects for web and other media. Students will learn how to import graphics, videos, animation, special effects, and use sound. Basic scripting techniques are also used to build menus and control program flow.

 

 

棋牌类系列课程

  • 围棋类

Description:Go, the oldest board game invented by Chinese, seems to get a lot of attention. It has been transformed from cultural activities and mental competitions to educational programs for not only kids and teenagers but also adults in many countries since year 2000. Although there is an abundance of exceptional Go players in the world, a great teacher is difficult to come across. The traditional teaching style has persisted for more that 300 years, “passing on the formality but not on the essence.” In current era of high tech, non-scientific teaching method that rely heavily on memorization will surely become obsolete, especially in America.

Teacher Tang teaches Go to all kind of levels of students, with the support of her assistants. Her scientific method of teaching emphasizes vivid illustrations using real life examples. She pays attention to her students’ comprehension ability and customizes her teaching accordingly. She uses simply storytelling to explain complex strategies such as the global concept by thinking steps ahead. Through the class learning, the students will not only master how to play go or how to become better, more importantly, they are also more adapted to strategic thinking and equipped with mental skills. At the meantime, these activities will bring huge benefits to their brain development in a very special yet interesting way!

 

Number of Teacher Tang’s students are limited to 20 each class (junior and senior). Each student needs to bring their own Go set to the class.

  • 国际象棋

国际象棋在华夏的孩子里非常流行,几乎每周都有华夏的学生参加比赛,很多孩子的国际象棋都是在华夏起步的,对于低年级的学生从基本规则开始教,对于低年级和高年级的学生每次上课以配对比赛,习题研讨的方式来提高水平,从近年开始,在华夏大纽约校内举行至少两次由美国国际象棋协会认证的比赛。

  • 卡通漫画

专业美院老师为你讲解漫画的精髓, 任课教师擅长素描、色彩、速写、水粉、国画.

  • 绘画 *

低年级打下基本画画基础,高年级开始素描学习,每年举办一次华夏画展。老师自幼喜欢绘画。擅长素描,油画,计算机绘画。曾获中国林业科研单位全国首届美展油画二等 奖。纽约Scarsdale艺术协会会员。2012年10月及十一月,有作品在Tarrytown 和 Scarsdale 参展。

  • ·中国书法 Chinese calligraphy

Description: The class will cover the development of Chinese calligraphy throughout its history, including different forms in different dynasties.  It will also cover the styles of great calligraphers and how they influenced later generations. While teaching the basic technical skills, the lessons will also include Chinese culture stories, philosophy, arts, literature and poetry.  Each class session will include a) A lecture on background material and art appreciation, b) Teacher’s demonstration c) Guidance for students in the practice of new technique and content and d) Comments on the student work and help in creation of art and assignments.

  • 手工 Crafting

Description: It is fun here!  It is not only about sewing, stitching, knitting, it is about having fun and making friends.  You will work on your own projects and have someone to lend a hand when you get stuck.

  • 武术 Martial Art

Description:Martial arts classes are conducted in a family-oriented, supportive atmosphere. It’s not about competition or aggression. It’s about self-improvement, confidence, discipline and physical fitness.

  • 意力拳/气功

I-Liq Chuan is an art of cultivating consciousness based on Tai Chi and Zen principles of non-assertion, nonresistance, harmony of yin and yang, oneness and the present moment.

Curriculum

Unifying the mental and physical:

1.     Qigong: an effective way to achieve balance of energy within the body, calm your mind and loosen up the body.

Fifteen Basic Exercises:

·          Introduction to the Five Qualities of Unification of Movements

·          Three Dimensional Planes

·          Energy Force of Yin and Yang

·          Standing Meditation

·          Breathing Exercises

·          Footwork

·          Kicking

·          Power Training

Unifying Oneself with the Opponent, Partner Training:

·          Spinning hands

Expect to finish Qigong, part of Fifteen Basic Exercises, the whole Twenty-one Form and part of Spinning hands in one year time.  If progress of students is satisfactory, first few sections of authentic Yi-Jin-Jing (易筋经) will be introduced at the end of year.

  • 太极  Tai Ji

 Description: Taiji classes begin with introduction of the essential postures of Yang Style Taiji with emphasis on balance, relaxation, joint-loosening and increasing circulation. Later the sequence of the 24-Movement International Yang Style Taiji routine is taught and applications of the movements for self defense situations are introduced. Sensitivity to one’s surroundings and to others is developed through the practice of pushing hands with a partner. At the intermediate level, the emphasis is placed on proper body alignment, fluid coordination of movements, breathing techniques and cultivation of energy.

  • 瑜珈 Yoga

Description: Everyone can practice yoga. Regardless of age, experience, or level of flexibility – we can all benefit from yoga if we maintain “mental flexibility”…patience. The atmosphere at Being Yoga is friendly, supportive and attitude-free. We offer a variety of active and meditative yoga classes to help bring balance to your day.

Yoga, like life, is about finding bliss and serenity in the moment. So come on in, relax and learn to ‘be’ your yoga.

  • 禅修与健康 Meditation and Health

 Description: The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. We do this by developing positive states of mind in meditation and integrating this experience into our daily life.

 

 

Clubs

  • Debate Club

 Description: The debate club is great place for students to explore the art of “organized arguing.” in Chinese.  Students in debate club tend to enjoy discussing current issues and if they don’t already have a strong voice and good presentation skills, they will learn these abilities in a fun, safe club environment.

Students learn to create factual/logical, ethical and emotional arguments to persuade others in the club that their “side” is correct. The club uses the formal debate format. The goal is to compete in tournaments with middle and high school students.

 

The club’s purpose is to teach and train students in the fundamentals of debate, public speaking and essay writing.

·         Educate students about the art of speech and debate

·         Teach students how to develop research, reasoning, organizational and essay writing skills

·         Train students to be more confident speakers and debaters

·         Help students build leadership skills and improve individual responsibility

·         Compete with other school debate teams

·         Teach students to work collaboratively

  • Math Club

Description: Math club is an opportunity for interested students to prepare for various math competitions held throughout the year. We will look at non-traditional problems, using a variety of methods to solve them.  The Math Club is mainly for students in 6th through 8th grades; however, 5th graders are welcome to join us.  In case you didn’t know, you can be in math club even if you don’t like competitions!
